Tomintoul Seiridh

I’t time to wave the summer goodbye. Like Dion mentioned earlier it wasn’t a spectacular one, weather wise. But frankly, being a spring and autumn kind of person, I kinda liked it this way.

Mostly because firing up the bbq and tasting whisky in the garden, to me, is far more pleasant at 25°C and below than anything above. As long as it doesn’t rain.

But when it does get hot outside, there are a couple of drams which seem to fit. One of them is this Tomintoul Seiridh. A non-age-statement whisky that has matured on bourbon casks, before being finished in fresh oloroso casks. It’s bottled at 40% ABV and that’s something we (gladly) see less often, but there’s a market for that. Tomintoul even wears it as their motto: the gentle dram. And that’s how we went into this. Without too much expectations.

As it happens, I had a small holiday planned and Dion came over for the weekend. No holiday without whisky, so this Tomintoul went along. We picked one of the last beautiful-ish summer days of the year and gave it a whirl:

Tasting notes

Nose

Spicy wood and toast, some flowers and honey, raspberry and a warming whiff of hazelnut praliné. There even comes through a little bit of rum soaked raisins. Quite a wonderful nose!

Palate

The palate doesn’t really bring the same experience as the nose. There’s watery strawberry juice, some nuts and vanilla, but mostly just spicy wood and white pepper. Easy and gentle, maybe just the way they meant it to be.

Finish

Toasted oak, black pepper and walnuts. Fruity flavours are almost absent, but there’s a nice hint of warming spices to make up for it.

This is not a dram to savour for a whole night, but rather an appetizer or something we’d like as a refreshing dram on a warm summer day. Or, when you like to introduce somebody to whisky, this wouldn’t burn their tongue off immediately.
