Old Pulteney 12yo

We can’t deny it any longer, autumn has definitely arrived here in the Netherlands. Leaves are falling, rain is pouring from dawn to dusk and the temperature is dropping massively day by day. We get a little sad every year when summer ends but these weather conditions make us look forward to tasty drams even more!

Our friends at De Monnik Dranken gave us a chance to meet the Old Pulteney 12 years old this fall and there’s unquestionably no better occasion to pour this beautiful dram if you ask us. Imagine this:

It is a cold and foggy Sunday morning in October, you and your family are up for a nice and peaceful walk in the woods. Everyone is in a good mood and you’ve put on your wellies to be sure cause it can be soggy these days. Your kids are building a nice and cosy treehouse and your husband or wife takes pictures of that beautiful mushroom down by the tree. Life is good.

Back home, you put the heater on and you start preparing a phenomenal stew, the house is filled with mouthwatering scents. Your kids display all the things they’ve gathered from the forest and all the candles are on, this definitely has to be a sunday.

You have all the time in the world and while waiting for the stew to be ready, you pour yourself a dram of Old Pulteney 12 years old, the maritime malt:

Tasting notes

Nose

Salty to say the least, cinnamon is taking the upper hand. It smells like an apple cake fresh out the oven. A bit savoury with honey marinade, drupes and almonds.

Palate

Very juicy orchard fruits on the palate, cinnamon and vanilla. Sweet waffles or as we Dutch call it: Kniepertjes. A salty touch towards the finish.

Finish

An earthy and briny finish with a hint of peat somewhere. Cake and cookies with apple peel in the end. A very interesting and enchanting whisky, well done!

We hope you get why we think this is a perfect autumn dram and we’re not sure if the bottle will last until next year’s fall! Many thanks again to De Monnik Dranken for providing us with such beauty! Cheers!
