From a lot of whisky worldwide, you can not see what is hiding inside. The looks of the bottle doesn’t give anything away about the character of the dram. This Ian Mcleod’s Smokehead clearly isn’t one of those, one glance at the frightening exterior gives you an idea of what this whisky should taste like.
The skull, the dark colours, the smoke that blurs your eyes, everything checks out. This terrifying bottle came with a mask and a hat so we could become a Smokehead ourselves! For those of you who have seen any of the ‘Purge’ movies, it sorta kinda gives me that particular feeling. Shorter days are on their way, sunlight isn’t as strong as it was before and with Halloween one month away, this might be our dram of the month! Let’s see if the tasting notes match the looks of this beautiful bottle:
Tomato juice, copper, sweet cornflakes, rosehip and fish oil. Savoury notes such as stout, roasted meat with bacon. Somewhat buttery at the end.
Rich and sweet, vanilla, tropical notes and lime zest. Salted toffees are definitely in there. A beautiful mixture between the fruity and savoury notes, very well balanced!
A very interesting finish with fish oil, charred wood, matches and blackberries. A touch of mango and charred meat. It certainly is a rich but smooth dram, it offers just what you need!
In terms of expectations they could’ve make it a bit less friendly even (43% ABV), because it’s a surprisingly smooth and gentle dram for such a daunting label. Nevertheless, everything Ian Mcleod Distillers mentions -a rollercoaster of peat, smoke and spice with some delicate sweetness- is definitely there.
Special thanks go out to @monnikdranken who provided this bottle. We’ll be back soon with the High Voltage, which might just give us that tiny needed bit of power!
