Rock Island by Douglas Laing

We think there is truly something magical about whisky, the craftsmanship, the community, it almost feels like a fairytale. Everytime we visit a distillery, we feel like we’re time travelers.

Distilleries often do have some amazing stories behind their releases and that is, in some cases, what can make or break a whisky for a huge part in our opinion.

The story behind this Rock Island Blended Malt, with spirit coming from Jura, Islay, Arran and Orkney, is actually a simple but strong message. Just like the oyster on the bottle, the real treasure is inside. We think an oyster is just what a lot of whiskies are, somewhat ‘ugly’ on the outside, but you’re looking for that beautiful pearl inside, because on the inside is what really counts. Looks can be deceiving and the ‘personality’ of a whisky is what truly matters. Although this bottle is beautiful, we need to take a look at the tasting notes to get to know him:

Tasting notes

Nose

Pear, a whiff of seabreeze, banana, white grapes, popcorn, lemon ice cream and creme bruleé. Some fresh peat comes along.

Palate

Somewhat smooth on the palate, with apples, pear juice, barley and grapes. A bit minerally as well. It feels like you are on a pier.

Finish

An interesting finish with salty fudge, biscuits and some peat. Lychees, vanilla and even some chlorine (in a good way). Very dry, fresh and sweet in the end.

We get what Douglas Laing has tried to do here, the coastal notes are shining through but to be completely honest with you guys, we missed a bit of a punch. Don’t get us wrong here, it is a tasty dram and we can imagine this is an awesome whisky to pour with friends during a fishing trip, or at the boulevard on a sunny day. It definitely needs a better occasion than where we were tasting this dram. We will enjoy this even more during a summer barbecue, bring on the oysters!
