Linkwood 12yo 2008-2021 by Càrn Mòr

Lately, Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers are doing an extraordinary job when it comes to releasing interesting expressions. We sometimes suspect them to be a fly on our wall when we are talking about which releases we would like to see because sooner or later they’ll end up on our shelf. Take a look at this Càrn Mòr, which is part of the Strictly Limited series.

For me (Dion) it ticks every box, distilled at the Linkwood Distillery, 12 years old, matured in a Pedro Ximenez sherry hogshead and bottled at a subtle but strong 47.5 % abv. It is safe to say that we’ve loved every single Linkwood we had so far, Linkwood certainly has that typical character where you can often find dairy and orchard fruity notes. We’ll see if this PX Hogshead can leave one’s mark:

Tasting notes

Nose

Tobacco at first, candy apples, spinach and orchard fruits. Very sweet with wine gums and hazelnut creme. Some cinnamon and fresh red pepper on top.

Palate

Sweet orchard fruits once again, the Linkwood character is still there. Old oaky notes, a bit spicy as well and apricot for a sweet and bitter transition to the medium length finish.

Finish

A very dry finish, some tobacco / cigar smoke is definitely in there. Stewed fruits, cinnamon and rosehip jam.

This unquestionably is an appetizing dram, they’ve done a splendid job putting this lovely Linkwood on a Pedro Ximenez cask. It really reinforce each other and is undoubtedly something you can pour all year long, although we believe this one is best enjoyed during an autumn rain shower. Luckily, autumn is just around the corner for us. Cheers!
