GlenAllachie 12yo PX Sherry Wood Finish

Having had the entire core range from 10 to 25yo at the moment they were launched, I can safely say that GlenAllachie is not my favourite kind of dram. Ginger and lime formed a big part of their backbone and those flavours usually don’t have my preference. Sure, they were enjoyable drams, but given the retail price, I’d rather go for something that fits my palate.

But I don’t give up so easily, so when I came across this 12yo PX Sherry Wood Finish I decided to buy one. This whisky is bottled at 48%, that’s a good start!

Tasting notes

Nose

Orange marmalade, wood, citrus fruits, dark chocolate, ginger, sultanas and vanilla.

Palate

Zesty, tingling and woody, with sultanas and Jaffa cakes.

Finish

Spicy with lemon, candied orange peel, lemon and ginger, almonds, bananas, figs and raisin bread.

The backbone is definitely here too, the sherry is a nice layer on top, but not very well integrated. I personally hoped for a more rounded dram, but it’s quite spicy and woody. Should I conclude that GlenAllachie is just not for me, or do have some good recommendations for me to try?
