Bottled for whiskyshop The Old Pipe in The Netherlands, this 16 year old Bunnahabhain was something I couldn’t resist taking it home. It has matured on oloroso sherry casks and was bottled at 55.8%. Could you?
Lots of tobacco and meaty notes, stewed pears, cinnamon, dried red fruits and apricots. There’s a whiff of pepper which makes it a little harsh.
Dry, spicy wood, gunpowder, pepper, raisins and figs, orange zest. Not easy on the tongue, but very interesting. Reminds me of the Moìne Olososo, but without the Moìne.
Lots of tannins, but sweet, like a red wine, dark notes of figs and dates, salty liquorice, tobacco, pepper and heavy spices.
Not the easiest Bunna, mainly because of the peppery notes, but have a little patience and it opens up nicely.
