The Ileach Cask Strength

The Ileach Cask Strength scores well with the critics, Jim Murray awarded this single malt from an unnamed distillery a mindblowing 97 points. And although we don’t always share his opinion, he’s pretty right on this one, although 97 maybe is a bit steep, no?

Tasting notes

Nose

Peat, campfire, iodine, a bit meaty and some lemon peel

Palate

Charred meat, lemongrass, dry and peppery, a combination of old wood and leather

Finish

Be sure to add a few drops of water to open this one up, cane sugar, peppers, oranges, seaweed, dark chocolate.. there’s a lot going on once you get past the alcohol

Try to find the sweet spot in this one, straight from the bottle it’s pretty harsh, but water it down too much and you’ll get a bit of an ‘artificial tasting’ sweetness. This bottle seems to be a combination of Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Caol Ila and the Ardbeg Corryvreckan. But most probably this is a Lagavulin. Wonderful stuff if you’re a peat head!
